Pit firing
These pots are fired in a large pit 2-3 feet deep and lined with sawdust, salt and other chemicals. After the pots are covered with organic materials such as seaweed, banana peels, various leaves, they are then gently placed over the sawdust nest, covered with wood, and cow patties. They are fired for several hours until the fire dies down. The combination of heat, smoke, chemicals, and help from the fire gods create the unique swirl of colors that are embedded in the pots.
